Prepare To Get Scared... In Eerily Familiar Fashion.

Sophie's Curse is a first-person light management horror game, similar to Five Nights At Freddy's and other titles, where your perspective is constrained and your ability to both see and avoid monsters is limited. It even features the same basic premise, of taking a job (in this case at an old folks' home) for low pay. How does it differentiate itself?

Quickly Running Away

The chief difference between Sophie's Curse and other similar games is the mobility the protagonist has. You can walk, run, manipulate objects, and position yourself, and navigating your workplace is more complex and more dangerous than browsing through screens. In this sense the game is closer to a title like Tattletale, though the number of things on-hand that you need to manage is lower than that game. Overall the game does a better than average job of putting you in the situation and focusing on horror.

A Curse You Can Bear

If you're looking for a gripping story, Sophie's Curse may not provide it, but if you're just looking to be scared out of your skin just to make ends meet, and suffocated by darkness and danger, then Sophie's Curse is a fantastic game for that, and its graphics and movement options are top-notch for its genre.

PROS

  • Very atmospheric
  • Significant mobility

CONS

  • Minimal story
  • Odd mechanics
